The Science Public Engagement Partnership (SciPEP) is a science engagement and outreach organization—run jointly by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science and the Kavli Foundation—which investigates and teaches effective science communication. Each year, they host a national conference to discuss pressing issues in science communication, and this year, they invited YSC to attend.
It was an absolute honor to present our vision for Yale Science Communication at SciPEP’s 2021 virtual conference: Communicating the Future: Engaging the Public in Basic Science. With panel discussions on the roles of awe, humor, and deference to experts in science communication, insightful breakout sessions on public engagement and outreach, and a keynote address from Nobel laureate, Dr. Jennifer Doudna, of CRISPR fame, the conference was a privilege to attend. We came away with a renewed excitement, inspiration, and drive to improve graduate student science communication at Yale University, and we look forward to executing our vision in the years ahead!
Thank you again to SciPEP, Jennifer Doudna, the panelists, all of the science communicators who attended our talk, and all of the terrific conference coordinators! We are so grateful for your insight, interest, and inspiration!
